RMBA is seeking an Upper School Guidance Counselor to provide social-emotional counseling to students in grades 6–12 (approximately 120 students). The counselor supports student well-being, builds strong relationships with families and faculty, and contributes to a culture of care and accountability. The role involves both proactive programming and responsive support in alignment with the school’s mission and values.
The ideal candidate will act as a trusted adult for students navigating the challenges of adolescence and work in partnership with parents, faculty, and administrators to foster a safe, supportive, and responsive school environment. This role centers around prevention, intervention, and relationship-building to support mental health and overall student wellness.
Clinicians should have good knowledge of current support and therapeutic resources outside of the school for appropriate referrals.
Key Responsibilities
Student Support
- Provide short-term individual and group counseling to students coping with anxiety, stress, friendship challenges, family transitions, identity exploration, and other social-emotional needs.
- Serve as a visible, approachable presence for students, fostering trust and rapport across all grade levels.
- Develop and maintain confidential records and communicate appropriately with parents and school personnel, ensuring student privacy and safety.
Crisis Response & Referral
- Respond to urgent or crisis situations with compassion, professionalism, and discretion.
- Coordinate with families and outside mental health professionals when long-term or intensive support is needed.
- Participate in safety planning and support re-entry for students returning from hospitalization or extended absence.
Prevention & Programming
Design and implement school-wide or grade-level programming focused on wellness, healthy relationships, coping skills, emotional regulation, and peer support.
- Partner with faculty to integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) into advisory, classroom, and experiential education settings.
- Provide workshops or discussions for students on timely and developmentally appropriate topics (e.g., managing stress, digital citizenship, inclusion, empathy).
Faculty & Parent Collaboration
Serve as a resource for faculty in understanding adolescent development and supporting students with emotional or behavioral concerns.
- Collaborate with teachers, EC/LS Counselor and administrators to ensure the social-emotional needs of students are addressed in the school culture.
- Offer parent guidance and host educational sessions on relevant mental health and parenting topics.
Candidates should be flexible and be able to assume various roles not related specifically to counseling i.e. substituting, supervising extracurricular activities and/or trips including the ability to spend most lunches/ recesses with all students to help with supervision, guidance and support. Some evening hours are expected.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field (required).
- Licensure or certification (LPC, LCSW, LMFT, School Counselor) preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in a school or youth services setting.
- Knowledge of adolescent development, trauma-informed care, and current best practices in school mental health.
- Sensitivity to the values and practices of a Modern Orthodox Jewish community; ability to work effectively in a religiously observant school environment.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Robert M. Beren Academy invites applications for a full-time (30 hours) Student Support Specialist for the 2025-2026 academic year. The specialist will primarily work with students who require additional support in their learning journey.
Essential Duties
- Participate as an active team member in carrying out the Office of Student Support’s vision to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically and personally.
- Maintain current knowledge of recommended instructional strategies and multiple teaching methods.
- Act as an advocate for the students as required.
- Provide diagnostic and prescriptive services for students.
- Review student records and discuss pertinent information with classroom teachers.
- Provide direct instruction to students individually or in small groups, either in the regular classroom or in a separate location (as considered appropriate).
- Support the classroom teacher(s) by sharing expertise and assisting with systematic instruction, particularly accommodating multi-level learning.
- Gather additional information necessary to determine appropriate interventions and programming using various assessment procedures.
- Provide written reports and/or interviews for parents at each reporting period, as deemed necessary.
- Participates in interviews with classroom teachers and parents/guardians as needed.
- Create a strong partnership with parents so they feel comfortable and valued as part of the educational team.
- Develop and maintain students' personal learning plans by consulting with classroom teachers, parents, and the appropriate school division personnel.
- Maintain accommodations sheets for each student.
Required Education, Knowledge, Qualifications, and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree preferred
- Successful teaching experience with students performing below grade level
- Experience working with middle and high school students preferred
- Knowledge of how the referral process works in private schools, as well as with HISD or other local education agencies
Desired but not Required:
- Experience working with ESL (English as a second language) students
- Hebrew speaker
